Evaluation

During the last project I feel that I made my decision on what topic to look into too quickly, this time I intend to put a lot more thought into the topic I choose. As I feel that my lack of engagement with the topic I chose was a large factor towards me not doing as well as I perhaps could have done during this term. It is extremely important to find something that interests and inspires you so that you enjoy gathering the work and will therefore put more effort into the work you are creating. Therefore this time when given the brief on the next topic I intend to write out some spider diagrams and initial ideas so that I can make an informed decision on what I am wanting to study for the next topic. This will hopefully mean that I can gather a much larger body of work that is also to a higher quality.

Drawing Task (Paper Folds): Origins

For this task we were asked to experiment drawing by either folding, pleating or cutting. I started by just testing with A4 pieces of cartridge paper. Whilst doing this I realised that the most interesting outcomes of mine were created by folding the paper, therefore I decided to focus on this.

I then started to look at adding cutting into folded pieces. As the folds give the cuts more depth. I felt that this worked very well.

The previous two are my favourite designs. I think that they have a very effective texture as they are delicate, therefore i continued with this design and attached separate pieces together.

Drawing Workshop Task Two

My sketchbook is a very important tool for me in my work as it is a place in which I plan and evaluate. I also create many drawings in my sketchbook as primary research which often lead into initial ideas and then into designs for more final work. I believe that my sketchbook flows quite well as I feel that it is simple to see how I go from one step to another, I often use sketches or thumbnail photos and bullet point notes to explain my thinking. Although I feel I could do more planning in my book for workshops etc and intend to for my current workshop (Hand Processes), using the methods I discussed.

I also often use my sketchbook to evaluate work. I believe that this is a very important part of design work, especially important when doing new workshops, as it is difficult to produce something that it is exactly what you want when it is the first time you are using that equipment. Therefore it is important to evaluate what went well and what didn’t and if something didn’t work why it didn’t work. I believe that I do this efficiently in my sketchbook, as I attach samples of the work and bullet point notes of about how well it worked.
The other main topic I put into my book are my contextual references, I find it very interesting to look into a variety of artist. Especially ones which relate to my work as it can often help stimulate ideas for your own designs or drawings. I usually research the artists work first to get some background knowledge and then look at images of their work and discuss what I like or dislike about them. I find this very useful in helping me with my own work.

Drawing Workshop

We were given a task to create a drawing that was a meter by a meter in size and only to use black and white media, it also had to be portable in some way. As it had to be portable I decided to fold mine, I tried to create a shape that related to my project. I then unfolded parts of it and drew on them to create a sort of layered drawing.
Our next task was to deconstruct the large drawings we had created and then reconstruct them in a different way. I decided to cut mine into four pieces and then fold the separate pieces into a triangle shape using stitches to hold them in place.

I then looked at making the inside of the triangles more interesting. I attached different parts together using long stitches.

Hand Processes Workshop

These are French knots that I created in the hand processes workshop. The black and white work well together as it makes the pattern bold.

During the hand processes workshop we were asked to bring in a large number of the same object of our choice. I chose to take in masks and bobbles. Here I am just looking at different ways to layer them up.
Again just looking at layering.

I then began to look at changing the surface of the masks, using parts of the bobbles. So that it was less obvious what they actually were.
I also looked at changing the surface with stitch. This is a chain stitch.

Print Workshop

I created this style of print using two separate screens, the first was the statue (grey in and pigment) the second was the trees (green ink and pigment). As I wanted to create the impression that the statue was behind the trees. I then overlapped the trees again but slightly off to give the two shades of green.
In this print I used brown fabric instead of white as I wanted the colours to be less bold and more subtle, I also wanted it to be an earthy colour as it relates to my topic. Although the colours didn’t stand out as much as I had intended I did like the faint effect, I then used gold foil over the top of the tree to make it stand out and bring it to life.

On this print I have used puff, I decided to use this on a very thin fabric so that there was a big contrast.

These are from my second screen, on this screen I had the image and the outline separate so that I could use a different colour for the outline, as I wanted to make the image bold but also detailed.
Here I use flocking and foiling, however I hasn’t worked very well as I think I needed to put more glue through the screen.
